First their lives. Depression is not a disease

First let’s
start with, what is depression?

Depression is a common and serious medical illness that will negatively
affect how you feel and the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is
also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest
in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical
problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home. (Credits:

Depression
is not only a state of being sad it is a disease that will conquer the ability
to feel emotions either good or bad, at all. Depression not only involves the
mind it also involves the body and thoughts. In different cultures some say
they experience excessive headaches and extreme pain and this is identified as
depression. This disease can be passed down through genes or can follow external
events. Depression affects twenty percent of all Americans some without even
knowing it at sometime during their lives. Depression is not a disease that
only affects girls, it affects boys too. Every human being is likely to have depression.
Although women are three times more likely to become depressed than men, men
are five times more likely to commit suicide when depressed than women. Some
think that women have a less pleasing social role and their hormones make them
more vulnerable to depression. Men are more subject to keep their emotions
bottled up inside of them because of their role in society and that they do not
have the societies permission to express their feelings openly because man
think is a girls thing to express their feelings and will be judge by their
friends.

Depression
is one of the most common psychological problems, affecting nearly everyone
through either personal experience or through depression in a family member.
The cost in human suffering cannot be estimated. Depression will interfere with
normal functioning, and frequently causes problems with work, social and family
adjustment. It causes pain and suffering not only to those who have a disorder,
but also to those who care about them. Serious depression can destroy a family
life as well as the life of the depressed person forcing them to commit suicide
as their only exit to stop their suffering. There are many symptoms of
depression which are:

Impact of
Depression:

-Causes tremendous
emotional pain

-Disrupts
the lives of millions of people

– Affects
the lives of families and friends

-Causes
early awakening, excess sleepiness, insomnia, or restless sleep

– Excessive
hunger, fatigue, loss of appetite, or restlessness

– Agitation,
excessive crying, irritability, or social isolation

– Lack of
concentration, slowness in activity, or thoughts of suicide

This are
just some of the many effects that will happens to someone, each of these will
affect the person’s mentality and body differently. There are many types of
depression and each of them has different effects and all of them are bad in
their own way because they all have different impacts on the person. The most
severe one is major depression. Major Depression is the most severe case of
depression that there is, the symptoms for Major Depression are just like any
other type of depression. To be Majorly Depressed you do not have to have been
hospitalized or medicated. Lots of people get depression confused with extreme
sadness. Depression is not a term just to be thrown around; it is a severe
state of being that can make people harm themselves.

Other types
of depression are:

– Bipolar Depression, also known as, Manic
Depression, is yet another type of Depression. This type has very different
symptoms than that of Major Depression or Dysthymia. The symptoms of Bipolar
Disorder are having both very high and very low mood swings. When one has Manic
Depression one day they could be extremely happy and the next in a very severe
depressive mood. This change in mood can happen over hours or over a period of
time.

– Persistent depressive disorder often referred to as dysthymia, persistent depressive
disorder is a long-term but less-severe type of depression. This milder
depressive disorder can be chronic and keep you from living your life normally.

Sure sometime we all feel sad at times. But when someone has depression
is different. This serious mood disorder can cause severe symptoms that affect
how you feel, think, act, and manage your daily life, causing constant feelings
of sadness and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities. The word
depression is actually just an “umbrella” term for a number of different types
of depression, from major depression to atypical depression to dysthymia.
Luckily all types of depression can be treated with medication and therapy
either severe or mild. Medications and counseling can help to improve depression
symptoms and give someone their life again. But it won’t be easy work, according
to doctors it could take up to six months or up to a year for a person to stop
feeling depressed. But if depression were to left untreated it could be
harmful. Untreated depression is
a serious problem. Untreated depression will increase the chance of risky
behaviors such as drug or alcohol addiction. It also can ruin relationships,
cause problems at work, and make it difficult to overcome serious illnesses.

If medication and talk therapy does not work there is also another
way to overcome depression, which is electroconvulsive therapy. In this therapy
a low voltage current is moved through the brain for one to two seconds at a
time to produce a controlled seizure. Although electroconvulsive therapy can be
dangerous and cause memory loss or disorientation is proves to help those in
need of it. (Credits: WEBMD)

Depression can be avoided with having a good family life and high
self esteem. All though talking
about your problems and not keeping them to yourself helps immensely to avoid
emotional breakdowns and blowups. Avoiding stressed full situations where you
can’t get out off helps. Talking about your problems is one of the best ways to
avoid depression, expressing yourself or writing in a dairy is a good way to
avoid it, suicide won’t end the problems and will hurt your family.
