In a heart and leaving, without it. “

In the Broken Heart by John Donne the author uses imagery to reveal his attitude toward the nature of love. He uses imagery to show readers a visual of love and how he feels about love and his pain. He uses aspects of death and pain that he lives with and how he reacts to love throughout the poem. He uses descriptive words to help the reader visual the way he feels about love. The reader can understand that love has left an emptiness in him and he is hurt and damaged inside he conveys love as something powerful cruel and overpowering. In the first stanza shows the the author doesn’t believe that love happens over time but instead love can devour a person. First stanza line 4 “But that it can ten in less space devour” here the author uses the image of love devouring and the author is suggesting that falling in love is not by choice. This also indicates that love is devouring and overpowering also that falling in love you are in an uncontrollable process. The imagery also can suggest that love eats up people and you’re involuntary and have no control over the process. The author also considers love as cruel and powerful and violent force at the ending of the second stanza. The author also suggests that love is a predator ” By him as by chain’d shot …He is ┬átyrant pike our hearts the fry”. In this line the author is trying to show the reader that love is very violent and makes people victims of it. We can also compare this to people trying escape and break free from love and escape and this image shows soldiers fighting against the force of love, as well as lovers attempting to escape from the possession of love. The pike is an image of a predator ready to attack and swallow a defenseless heart. The author also talks about a personal experience in stanza three he talks about entering the room with a heart and leaving, without it. ” I brought a heart in the room but from the room I carried none with me”. This suggests the when he walked in the room with the woman he walked out with nothing because of his pity and how he feels towards love at this point, and a feeling of rejection from the woman. At this point the author has an attitude of emptiness and he feels depressed his heart is shattered. In the Broken Heart by John Donne the author uses imagery to reveal his attitude toward the nature of love.
